Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader - 3D
Sunday 5th December 2010
Each year, for the past few years, we at Springfield love have gone to see a film at the cinema inviting friends, family, neighbours. One of the key reasons we have done so is because it builds community. Along with other events through the year such as our Feast in the Field, Holiday Club, Light Party, Cell events etc these are key opportunities for us to encourage people and have fun together.
In the past we have seen the previous two Narnia films - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; and Prince Caspian. We have also been to see The Nativity and A Christmas Carol.
Some time ago we approached our local cinema, the Empire in Sutton, to see if we could have an early viewing of the latest Narnia film The Voyage of teh Dawn Treader. They put the request upwards through the chain and we heard little more other than the question was being asked.
Eventually we received an email from Fox (the film's distributors) putting us in contact with Premier, the Christian media organisation, who were dealing with the churches on behalf of Fox. We explained why we wanted to see it early and our track record and they were sympathetic to our case.
Well time went on, and we had just given up hope, with less than 2 weeks to go, when Will received a phone call from Fox saying that we could have a showing of the film. Well! Thank you Fox!! It was the news we had prayed for and we were very grateful to Fox for the opportunity. It turned out that although Premier were doing showings for church leaders we were the only ones allowed our own exclusive preview.
With so little time we tried to communicate with everyone as best we could. Emails, web updates and Will's blog were all used to try and keep people up to date with what was going on. And boy did it keep changing.
Just when we thought we had sorted out a time for the film we suddenly were told we could only have the 3D version. Sutton couldn't cope with 2 at the same time so we had to go for different times (at the amse time Fox were asking us to have the film in the morning).
And then there was the weather. The earliest major snow fall for years and years. Roads clogged, ice everywhere. Would it even go ahead? At this point ticket sales essentially stopped! It was a nerve racking time. Then problems with St Paul's church (no heating) and Wallington Girls (no clearing of the snow and limited access) gave us a headache as to what to do.
Eventually we decided to go ahead with just the film. Nearly 500 people came to the showing and it was an enormous success.
Let's hope next year's is a little less eventful!
Will has blogged a review of the film on his blog http://willcookson.wordpress.com/2010/12/05/review-chronicles-of-narnia-voyage-of-the-dawn-treader/
